Pregnancy and SUD: A Comprehensive Overview and Effective Treatments

This module is a enduring recorded course on pregnancy and Substance Use Disorder. This module is designed to inform New Jersey health care professionals about the sociodemographics, the dangers that are present in pregnancy with SUD, the basics of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, how substance screening is completed during pregnancy, effective interventions and guidelines, what the standard care for SUD during pregnancy looks like, and common motivators and barriers in access to care.

Target Audience: New Jersey Physicians; Podiatrists; Physician Assistants; Certified Nurse Midwives; Dentists; Advanced Practice Nurses; Social Workers; Psychologists; Marriage & Family Therapists; and Professional Counselors.

Objectives:  At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the epidemiology and sociodemographics behind pregnancy and OUD
  2. Recognize the dangers associated with pregnancy and OUD for the mother and child
  3. Evaluate Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, its effects, and its treatment
  4. Convey different types of substance screening during pregnancy
  5. Recommend effective interventions and guidelines for treatment
  6. Integrate the standard care for OUD during pregnancy
  7. Identify the motivators and barriers in access to care for mothers who are affected
