RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration open and course begins September 22nd, 2023

Opioid Tapering in the Geriatric Patient is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This 1 recorded case study focuses on age related comorbidities, pharmacokinetics of opioid metabolism, medical comorbidities, opioids to avoid in the geriatric population, and the changes in pain perception in aging.

TARGET AUDIENCE: New Jersey Physicians; Podiatrists; Physician Assistants; Certified Nurse Midwives; Dentists; Advanced Practice Nurses; Social Workers; Psychologists; Marriage & Family Therapists; Professional Counselors; Athletic Trainers; Dentists; and Pharmacists.

OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Diagnose common age-related comorbidities in the geriatric patient with chronic pain
  2. Comprehend pharmacokinetics of opioid metabolism in the setting of liver and/or chronic renal disease 
  3. Discuss medical comorbidity, opioids to avoid in the elderly, and indicators for needed opioid taper
  4. Recognize changes in pain perceptions associated with aging
