Opportunities For Opioid Taper in the Difficult Geriatric is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This 1 recorded case study focuses on the changes in pain perception associated with aging, possible risks and dangers associated with caring for the geriatric population, how cognitive impairment affects chronic pain and common situations for opioid taper.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Healthcare Professionals with Prescribing Authority (i.e. Physicians, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists)
OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Assess changes in pain perceptions associated with aging
- Recognize falls risk; suspected elder abuse; caregivers who argue for more pain medication
- Acknowledge the burden of cognitive impairment among patients with chronic pain
- Identify common situations for opioid taper (i.e. hospital discharge; rehab stay; pulmonary illness; break in pain contract, family/patient request)
