RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration opens and course begins January 2nd , 2023

When Visceral Opioid Use Masks Underlying Pathologies is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This presentation will include case studies that focus on the meaning of masking symptoms from opioid analgesia, data associated with underlying illness when there is no “complaint of pain”, early changes in physical function that may indicate new or undertreated pain, and potentially masked pathology.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Healthcare Professionals with Prescribing Authority (i.e. Physicians, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists)

OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the meaning of masking symptoms (use steroids as example) from opioid analgesia
  2. Assess data associated with underlying illness when there is no “complaint of pain” 
  3. Recognize early changes in physical function that may indicate new or undertreated pain 
  4. Plan to rule out potentially masked pathology
