OVERVIEW OF HOSPITAL-BASED ADDICTION CARE

IN-PERSON DIDACTIC: Will be held on Tuesday May 28th, 2024 at 8:30 am EDT. Registration is now open.

TIME OF IN-PERSON DIDACTIC: 8 Hours

This is a hybrid live activity that will use a standardized, evidence-based substance use disorder (SUD) prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery curriculum to train and inform New Jersey health care licensees with prescribing authority, in compliance with federal and state statutory and regulatory guidelines. This in-person didactic is designed to inform New Jersey health care professionals on a comprehensive overview of hospital-based addiction care in both emergency medicine (EM) and inpatient care settings to managing patient-directed discharge to harm reduction strategies.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Physicians; Physician Assistants (PAs); Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs); Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the neurobiology of addiction and addiction cycle framework (binge/intoxication, withdrawal, and preoccupation/anticipation), and neuroadaptations in the domains of increased incentive salience, decreased brain reward and increased stress, and compromised executive function.​ 

2.​Identify the historical origins of the overdose crisis and influence of policy on its flaws and progressions, and discuss trends and statistics pertaining to medication for addiction treatment (MAT) and lack of access and barriers to utilization.​ 

3.​Recommend reasoning for screening, brief intervention, and referral for treatment (SBIRT) of patients with substance use disorder (SUD) in emergency medicine (EM) and inpatient care settings, and compare various screening methodologies for predicting aberrant substance-related behavior among patients receiving opioids for chronic pain management, and those using illicit fentanyl, heroin, and other substances.​ 

Available Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits for Physicians:

Rowan–Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan–Virtua SOM) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.
 
Rowan–Virtua SOM designates this activity  for a maximum of 8 AOA Category 1–A credit(s) and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in the activity.
 
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan-Virtua SOM) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
 
Rowan–Virtua SOM designates this live activity for 8 AMA PRA Category 1 credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

To receive a certificate of completion, and CME certificate: All health care professionals must complete an Attestation Form, Outcome Survey and an Evaluation to receive a certificate of completion. Upon completion of these items, physicians will receive a CME certificate (AOA or AMA), other healthcare professionals will receive an AMA participation certificate.
