Case 1: Cervical Myelopathy: Chronic pain in the Setting of SUD

Note: This is not registration for the live webinar. This is registration for the enduring recorded course.

RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration opens and course begins July 1, 2024

Cervical Myelopathy is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will discuss a case involving a patient with chronic pain of an untreated etiology.  Multiple factors arise creating a more complex medical situation as well as appropriate management of the patient’s chronic pain and psychosocial needs.

TARGET AUDIENCE: New Jersey Physicians; Podiatrists; Physician Assistants; Certified Nurse Midwives; Dentists; Advanced Practice Nurses; Social Workers; Psychologists; Marriage & Family Therapists; Professional Counselors; Athletic Trainers; Dentists; and Pharmacists.

OBJECTIVES:  As a result of participation in this activity, members of the interprofessional team will improve their ability to:

1. Attend to subjective pain complaints in the patient with opioid use disorder.  Learners will be able to holistically approach a patient with opioid use disorder to assess for etiologies of pain.

2. Recognize signs and symptoms consistent with cervical myelopathy.  Learners will gain understanding of the clinical presentation of cervical myelopathy.

3. Prioritize the effect of chronic opioid management on diagnostic complexity.  This will aid learners in parsing out objective findings and subjective complaints that may be hampered by chronic opioid use.

4. Manage the transitioning from chronic pain to substance use disorder.  This can assist learners in the discussion with patients who are newly diagnosed with substance use disorder.  Pain management can still occur coincident with treatment of substance use disorder.
