Shared Decision-Making: The Role of OMM in Opioid Taper is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This case study focuses on provider-patient communication, MME calculations, adjuvant therapy, and the role of Osteopathic Manual Medicine as an effective treatment.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of participation in this course, members of the interprofessional team will improve their ability to:
1. Utilize shared decision-making in provider-patient communications regarding the plan of care. Learners will be able to communicate effectively with their patients to develop a suitable plan of care for both parties.
2. Integrate MME calculations when applying and managing opioid reduction. Learners will be able to use MME calculations to determine the correct dosage for their patient.
3. Provide adjuvant therapy such as OMM to motivate patient buy-in towards opioid taper. Learners will implement additional avenues of care in conjunction with the patient’s opioid medication. This will help the patient's plan of care to become less opioid centric.
4. Recognize the risks/ benefits and role of Osteopathic Manual Medicine (OMM) as an effective treatment in the management of chronic pain. Learners will be able to assess if OMM is a viable option for treatment.
