Case 5: Management of Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia- Enduring Recorded

RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration open and course begins July 1, 2024.
Management of Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This 1 recorded case study focuses on nociceptive sensitization caused by exposure to opioids, perception of pain, provider-patient communication, and preparations for possible withdrawal.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of participation in this course, members of the interprofessional team will improve their ability to:
1. Recognize the state of nociceptive sensitization caused by exposure to opioids.
2. Understand how opioids change the perception of pain. Learners will be able to anticipate possible changes in the patient’s level of comfort.
3. Integrate provider-patient communication for implementing an opioid taper. This will enable the learner and patient to effectively communicate the change of care.
4. Prepare the patient for possible withdrawal symptoms and how to avoid it. Learners will be able to inform the patient of what to expect and take the steps to minimize any complications.
