RECORDED Case 9: Opportunities For Opioid Taper in the Difficult Geriatric
RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration opens and course begins July 1, 2024
Opportunities For Opioid Taper in the Difficult Geriatric is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This 1 recorded case study focuses on the changes in pain perception associated with aging, possible risks and dangers associated with caring for the geriatric population, how cognitive impairment affects chronic pain and common situations for opioid taper.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Healthcare Professionals with Prescribing Authority (i.e. Physicians, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of participation in this course, members of the interprofessional team will improve their ability to:
1.Recognize changes in pain perceptions associated with aging. Learners will be able to understand the nuances of treating pain in the geriatric community.
2. Recognize falls risk; suspected elder abuse; caregivers who argue for more pain medication. Learners will be able to take multiple risk factors into consideration when developing a treatment plan.
3. Recognize the burden of cognitive impairment among patients with chronic pain. This will help prepare the learner for possible complications that may arise during treatment and care.
4. Identify common situations for opioid taper: Ex; hospital discharge; rehab stay; pulmonary illness; break in pain contract, family/patient request
