Rowan University’s 8th Annual First-Generation Symposium
Belonging & Community: First-gen Connections That Matter
In today’s interconnected world, the experiences of first-generation individuals stand at the forefront of dialogue around diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our conference, "Belonging & Community: First-gen Connections That Matter," seeks to highlight the vital importance of community and connection in fostering a sense of belonging for first-gen students from the first year of college through professional careers.
Theme Overview:
This conference will serve as a dynamic platform for presenters and first-gen students to share their stories, insights, and strategies for building meaningful relationships. We will explore how community can be a powerful catalyst for growth, support, and empowerment. Key areas of focus will include:
- Creating Inclusive Spaces: Strategies for cultivating environments where first-gen voices are heard and valued.
- Shared Experiences and Storytelling: The power of personal narratives in building connections and understanding within diverse communities.
- Collaboration and Networking: Developing robust networks that enhance personal and professional growth, emphasizing the role of peer support and mentorship.
- Civic Engagement and Leadership: Encouraging first-gen individuals to engage in advocacy and leadership within their communities, fostering a sense of ownership and belonging.
- Well-being: Strategies to support first gen students through emotional support, community building, academic success, financial literacy, cultural identity and belonging, career development, work-life balance, advocacy and empowerment.
Join us in celebrating the strength of first-generation connections and the meaningful impact they can have on individual journeys and collective experiences. Together, we can build a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and is empowered to thrive.
